The 1 MMR fire will forever be in my memory . You see a young man (Linn Schambers) took my security watch and sounding that night so I could get into a card game, and because he took my duty that night he was killed! I know I cant change what happened, but it has changed my life forever. I tell him I'm sorry every night before before I go to bed. I lived and my life continues to go on and now I'm a father and grandfather thanks to Linn.

“I was sound asleep in my rack when the klaxon went off: This is not a drill; this is not a drill all hand there is a fire on board! Everyone in the P-1 berthing compartment was up, getting dressed and moving to the muster station which was one deck up on the hanger deck. And after the head count and everyone was accounted for, volunteers were asked to man a hose line for a fire investigation. I volunteered”

I was going to go down to #1 MMR and work on some of our equipment, but decided to go eat first and go down afterwards. Just as I returned from eating and was getting my tools to go down the fire broke out. That meal probably saved my life as I would not have been familiar enough with the space to find the emergence exits in all the smoke and darkness".
